Oh. My. God. An (authentically French) diamond in the rough! The facade is plain, and actually reminds me of a floral shop, but once you walk in, you're greeted with the sweet smell of fresh bread and baked sugar. The owner is very friendly, and very expertly and patiently ran down the names and descriptions of all of the baked goodies on display in the case. Behind him was a wall of golden brown, crusty breads, testing my every ounce of self control before descending into a carb-filled bliss.

I ended up getting the morning bun and a latte. The morning bun was light, and though rolled in sugar, was just sweet enough. The kouign amann, danishes, croissants were all calling my name, but I resisted their siren calls. The latte was particular, with packed espresso by hand and milk steamed to order.

My friends ended up getting one of the two soups of the day: the coconut curry was delightful, with just a hint of coconut milk and a curry that was measured and not too overpowering.

I will be coming back. New year's resolutions be damned!

The sweet goodness of the freshly made apple turnover tickles the taste buds. The cinnemon enhanced apple slices, the buttery and flaky crust blanket the bed of this morning treat. More homemade pastries are including caramelized insanely flaky and flavorful sugar something-a-rather percolates the senses accompanied with a choice of fresh brewed coffees, teas and hot chocolate. You won't be disappointed but you will
Be tempted to break whatever diet you set out to follow this new year and what a great place to break that promise because although the calories may exceed your eating points for the day you will not walk away disappointed but you will find the aroma of this colossal bakery contained in its tiny box is a treasure and a seed of what should be coming to this Milwaukee neighborhood.  So start your morning with the breakfast of artisan champions and feed your hunger. You can always start your resolution over tomorrow.

My first visit to Amaranth was awesome--wide variety of people here and very friendly service. Each day seems to have a couple specials including 2-3 sandwich options, quiche options, soup options, and salad options. I went there half sandwich and soup route. Everything is made already so you get your food super quickly!

Stopped in this morning on a whim and ordered two cafe au laits and an assortment of pastries - a peanut butter cookie, a kouign aman, a cranberry scone and a savory brioche topped with potato slices, shallots and gorgonzola.

The brioche, a bit like a fancy pizza, was excellent. Apparently they have different flavors rotating daily. The cookie and scone were sizable and delicious. Small and somewhat burnt, the kouign aman left a little to be desired. But it was the last one in the case and otherwise satisfied my craving for this difficult-to-spell dessert, so no real complaints here. As for the atmosphere, it's nice and bright inside and the staff are super friendly. We nabbed a spot in the window at one of their beautiful marble-topped tables and enjoyed people watching and talking.

Overall, this is a sweet little spot in Walnut Hill and I'll definitely be back!
